The terror acts of Septemeber 11, 2001 are the defining moment of our generation; like the JFK assassination affected and defined an earlier one. This has to be a "loss of innocence" moment like that. I mean I knew people hated us but do they hate us THAT MUCH? Yes.
We got a new grand note, see above.
We have a secular society; as much as neocons and the religious right may dispute this; we are not a "Christian" nation. That is the point of seperation of church and state. This has been a growing thing of contention domestically.
People don't realize that the whole U.S. movie industry was held hostage by the Catholic Church who threatened boycott of pictures that didn't fit a predetermined moral schedule. Whether or not some of the grandest and most exqusite works of art were produced under the "Hayes Office", the type of religious hostility to modernity that exists within the Middle East is not as foreign as we might first think, and it is the wheels of history that turn slow; much as the wheels of justice.
The murder of 3000 plus souls is an attention getter but it is not Hiroshima nor the firebombing of London and Dresden and Tokyo. We are hostage to the talking heads who must sell soap and Chevrolets and convince us the oil companies are alright. We don't get the straight dope.
As much as we would like to treat terrorism as an act or war; is that the correct or most appropriate response, or the one that will make us safer? What about the troops that died young pursuing that scenario; add them to the 9-11 toll?
I'd rather have the soldiers home working out and staying fit for a proper war, the one we hope will never come. By invading Muslim nations and killing Muslims I think we played into their hands.
As a secular society like all the nations of western Europe, why are we so reviled in the Middle East. It is our unwavering and unquestioning support of Israel. We are playing games with ourself if we cannot recognize that our trunchent support of Israel has put us center stage with them as invaders in the Holy Land. This will be forever in some respect. It is not a war that will be won. It is founded on the myths and whispers of the the divine of three religions which each claim to hold exclusive truth. As long as folk are subject to the prostelyzing of zealots and those who prey on the poor and dispossessed and hopeless; we will see religion used as a weapon for hate. We have it here in the Aryan Nation.
We must become stronger and vote in a truly constitutional congress and quit letting the President of the United States (any president) lead the country around by the nose.
